How can school libraries improve students’ emotional health or wellbeing?

The annual Softlink School Library Surveys, school library staff are given the chance to express their perspectives on working in a school library through a series of open-ended questions. Despite acknowledging the difficulties they encounter, it is clear that their dedication and love for their profession not only shine through but also outweigh the challenges.

In the 2023 Australian School Library Survey, we wanted to explore this further so asked the question:  

“How can school libraries improve students’ emotional health or well-being?”

We had a fantastic response, with valuable feedback shared by school library staff across Australia. In collating these comments, the following themes emerged:

  • Creating a Safe & Inclusive Space
  • Providing Supportive Resources and Activities
  • Offering Personalised Interaction and Support
  • Designing Calm and Quiet Areas
  • Fostering Community and Belonging

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Space

In today’s busy world, school libraries are becoming more than just a spot for books—they’re turning into safe, inclusive spaces where students can find support and a sense of belonging. We spoke with school library staff to get their take on how libraries can boost students’ emotional well-being. Their thoughts highlight the importance of creating welcoming environments where every student feels valued and supported. Here’s what they shared.

"Libraries can be a safe haven for students who are struggling for many different reasons and all are important. Students who have not made friends or are loners, students who wish to study, students who don't have the resources at home to assist them and our school has many of these students, students who just want to come in out of the weather. the Library staff are always here for them."

“A library is often a safe space for students.  We try to make our library as inviting and engaging as possible to welcome as many students as possible and create a familiarity with this space.  It then allows us to create a rapport with students who will hopefully feel comfortable with us when they need somebody to talk to.”

“By providing a safe supervised space for students with a variety of seating options, relevant print and digital resources and good board games.”

“Creating a safe, staffed space that students can access when needed without being pigeonholed into a specific time that they can access the library.”

Providing Supportive Resources and Activities

School libraries are increasingly recognised as key players in supporting students' well-being, not just through offering a quiet place to read, but by providing a wide range of resources and activities that cater to their emotional needs. We reached out to school library staff to hear how they’re using books, programs, and creative activities to support students’ emotional health. Their insights show just how impactful a well-curated collection and engaging activities can be in helping students feel supported and connected. Here’s what they shared.

“We support our students by providing a safe space for many of them. They regularly come in not just to read or borrow books, they come in to play chess or other games, to do puzzles or to do schoolwork. We help out with printing of assessment tasks and resolve minor IT issues with their devices.I think this helps them feel like a valued member of our community, a place where they can hang out, or ask for help and be heard and helped.”

“Provide space for students during break times, run friendship group activities.”

“Libraries are seen as safe places, engaging students in activities held within the library outside of scheduled library lesson times. Space is sometimes used for staff to engage in social and emotional well-being with students 1-1.”

Offering Personalised Interaction and Support

School libraries are uniquely positioned to offer personalised support that can make a real difference in students' lives. By getting to know their students individually, library staff can provide tailored guidance, recommend specific resources, and create a more supportive and understanding environment. We asked school library staff how they’re offering personalised interactions to enhance student well-being. Their responses highlight the power of one-on-one connections and the importance of being attentive to each student’s unique needs. Here’s what they had to say.

“By continuing to be places that are welcoming and supportive through interactions with staff, welcoming spaces and resources that provide relevant information for all students.”

"Providing a safe space that is welcoming and calming. Have resources on hand that are relevant for the students needs. Provide positive interactions with students during their time in the library"

“Provide a safe and welcoming place, offer resources on growth mindset and emotional support”

“Being a supportive environment, by providing a welcoming and inclusive space. Providing resources to students, and being a friendly face if students need assistance.”

Designing Calm and Quiet Areas

In the hustle and bustle of school life, having a calm and quiet space can be a refuge for students. School libraries are stepping up to design areas where students can unwind, reflect, and find peace amid their busy days. We spoke with school library staff about how they’re creating these serene environments to support student well-being. Their insights reveal the importance of thoughtful design in making the library a true sanctuary for students. Here’s what they shared.

“Provide a quiet calming space, Diverse reading materials, Supportive Staff, Safe Spaces, Access to Technology,”

“Keep libraries as a  calm, quiet place where kids can feel safe and recharge away from the stress of the classroom.”

“The Library is a safe, quiet, calm space, students emotional health and well being improves if the Library is open for students every day who need a quiet safe space It helps with creativity, self esteem and well being. Libraries are essential in all schools.”

"By providing an inviting comfortable safe space to be where everyone is welcome - from the studious student who wants to focus on their study, to the more social student who wants to work in a group; from the reader, to the social reader, to the student who just wants a quiet space. By 'seeing' each student - talking to them, knowing what they read, how they work, what they need to grow and become mature respectful young people and making them feel welcome and respected in return"

Thoughts and Takeaways

Creating an environment that supports students' emotional well-being is more important than ever, and school libraries are at the forefront of this effort. From designing calm and quiet areas to offering personalised interactions, the strategies shared by school library staff highlight the critical role libraries play in fostering a sense of safety, support, and belonging.

As we consider the ideas discussed, it’s clear that even small changes in the library's design, resources, and staff approach can have a significant impact on students’ mental health. Prioritising these elements in school libraries isn’t just about enhancing the learning experience; it’s about nurturing the whole student, ensuring they have the space and support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

These takeaways remind us of the powerful influence a well-curated and thoughtfully managed library can have on the lives of students. As we move forward, let's continue to explore and implement these ideas to make our libraries true sanctuaries for student well-being.
